A unique acknowledgement number with an assurance to resolve within two months tax-related grievances related to income tax refunds and tax computations has been introduced for taxpayers. The number is slated to be entirely different from other numbers such as like the PAN, TAN and Unique Transaction Number (UTN) issued by the IT department.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is working to ensure that this service is implemented as soon as possible and asked Chief Commissioners across the country to implement this new facility for taxpayers with immediate effect, according to PTI reports. The unique number will be issued to the applicant taxpayer who applies for rectification through any medium, whether it’s the post, online or in person. The unique number will serve as an acknowledgement of receipt of the complaint and can also be used again in the future for any contact with the I-T department.
The applicant would also be intimated as and when his or her grievance is resolved, as per CBDT’s directive. The CBDT took this decision following the Delhi High Court’s ruling on making the process of addressing tax-related problems smoother and friendlier for tax-paying citizens.
