Politicians can teach commoners a few things about personal finance. A study of affidavits filed by politicians for the Lok Sabha 2019 elections reveal that that they have diversified their assets, involved family members in wealth planning, taken adequate insurance, and sought greater wealth returns from equities. The focus should be on striking a balance between movable and immovable assets so that goals like regular income and capital appreciation are on track.

EMIs don’t necessarily mean affordability

When one is buying stuff on EMI, one is effectively giving up future income for present gratification. If at all there is one advice that needs to be heeded, it is ‘buy stuff only when you can really afford it’. ‘Really afford’ here means that one has cash in the bank to cover that expense. Not future income that may be needed to cover an emergency.
