The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is planning to phase out the compulsory submission of ITR-V forms to the board’s Central Processing Centre in Bangalore, as to not only make it easier on people filing their I-T returns online, but also encouraging more to file their returns online without having to physically send the ITR-V form to the processing centre in Bangalore.
The discussion to implement this move began after the Board realized that lakhs of ITR-V forms were failing to reach the centre. The CBDT plans to track the returns paid online through the digital signature provided to everyone who files returns online, which they will use to identify the taxes filed.
This customer-friendly move will be announced either through a notification of a rule change or an amendment to the Income Tax Act. The Finance Ministry and the CBDT aim to completely remove the filing of ITR-V forms through both physical and online means, as the department feels that it can satisfactorily gauge the authenticity of the returns filed and also encourage more people to file their returns online.
