What would you do if you became the world’s first quadrillionaire (a quadrillion is 1 followed by 15 zeroes). Well, that is exactly what Chris Reynolds, a resident of Pennsylvania asked himself when PayPal, one of the most popular online payment services recently refunded a whopping $92 quadrillion, making him the richest man in the world, if only for a short time.
PayPal immediately withdrew the amount from his account once the company realized the mistake. The company didn’t say anything about the incident, other than that it was an error. Incidents like this are not new. Recently, an employee sleeping on the job nearly cost a German bank $293 million and herself, her job. The employee who fell asleep at her desk accidently changed the amount on a transfer request for a pensioner by falling asleep while holding the ‘2’ key. The resulting amount was around 222 million euro, which was transferred soon after being approved by one of her colleagues before the error was identified in a system check.
The 48-year-old employee, who had been with the bank for 26 years, was immediately terminated from her job. She took her case before the regional labour bank in Germany, where the bank was ordered to return her to her post. The court stated that though the mistake was a serious one, it deserved at least a warning before drastic measures were taken.
